Do not be fooled–Domain Renewal Scam

Written by

This week, a letter arrived. A Domain Name Expiration Notice from Domain Registry of America (DROA). Do not be fooled if you receive a similar letter!

This is a kind of scam where DROA counts on you scanning the letter rather than reading it. Take a look at this scan:

DROA are counting on you just reading what is highlighted by yellow and NOT what it says in the orange colored (colors courtesy of me) section.

First, the domain is expiring several months out and – Second, this is an ELECTIVE renewal & transfer to a new registrar and most importantly – Third, this is overpriced.

Always double check with your current registrar or web service company before paying. You usually have at least a couple of weeks before anything is at risk, even after a renewal deadline has passed.

Happy April 1st!
